Civil War Museum Fire
April 2008

ACR recently completed a combined fire and water loss at the 59,000 square foot Civil War Museum in Kenosha, WI. This started out as a fire loss that quickly expanded into a major water loss when the sprinkler system was activated.

One of the areas of major concern was a reproduction of a Civil War era hardwood floor from the 1860’s that was made with pine end cuts and grouted with a combination of sawdust and oil. Using a specialized drying system designed for hardwood flooring we dried the floor completely, eliminating the time and major expense that would have been incurred if the floor had to be replaced. The floor was dry and ready for service—not even refinishing was required!

Our Fire Division staff used specialized dry cleaning systems to remove the smoke and soot residue that the fire produced. Because proper cleaning procedures were followed, sealing and painting of the structure were not necessary.

Because of our focus on mitigation, ACR was able to restore the museum with the least intrusive and least expensive methods, getting them back in operation quickly.
