School was closed last week after flood

Proviso East High School, closed since Sept. 15, because of the recent flooding, is scheduled to reopen Wednesday, Sept. 23.
Heavy rains had flooded the school's boiler room with more than 10 feet of water.
TaQuoya Kennedy, a school spokeswoman, said heavy rains created flood water that "rushed into the boiler room and turned over a large container of diesel fuel." The fuel leaked into the water, she said.
The flood caused a chain reaction. The boiler room is connected to the utility service tunnels, which house the school's electrical equipment and wiring, Kennedy said.
"The flooding impacted everything from the electricity to the school's ability to provide potable water," she said.
Cleanup crews have been working around the clock to bring the school to working order.
Proviso East needed approval from the Fire Departments, the Health Department and the Regional Office of Education in order to reopen. Kennedy said the school received the go-ahead late Tuesday afternoon.
School officials do not yet have an estimate for the damage. Kennedy said the district's insurance company would pick up the tab.
Proviso West High and Proviso Math and Science Academy also closed on Sept. 15 but reopened two days later.
"Everyone has been very anxious to get students back into school," Kennedy said.
